What are the core beliefs of the Black Smoke Crew?
Family is our top priority. It’s not just about blood ties; sometimes, the ones we make are more important than the ones we come from. I make sure to spend quality time with my two kids, four grandchildren and my nieces and nephews.
We strive to improve ourselves after every call. We’re always learning and trying to improve. We discuss our mistakes on fire calls, identify what we could have done differently, and then train on those areas to become better. Even after 25 years in the fire service, I’m still taking classes (not just classroom ones). We can learn from everyone, even those we might not agree with. We love this job! But remember, We don't rise to the occasion, We fall back on our training.
Don't listen to the ones with the seats out side of the arena. Train and make mistakes. “Don’t take criticism from someone you wouldn’t seek advice from.”
We believe that being “aggressive” means being educated about potential hazards. You don’t need a red or white helmet to make a difference; everyone plays a crucial role.
Good stretches, fast water and quick mask ups are essential. Every second counts, so we make sure to get water and search done as soon as possible.
Experience in this craft is more valuable than any degree. Reading a book can not teach you how to swim.
We believe in leaving our station, apparatus, or work area in a better condition than we found it.
We use “Yes Sir” or “Yes Ma’am” until proven otherwise. We hold doors open for others and say “please” and “thank you.”
